So Mwende was asking me her usual stream of questions. This time is was about the Silver Surfer and why he's silver and does he live in space, etc.. At some point I interrupted and said, "So many questions, little girl!!". She responds with, "Yeah, that's just how Jesus made me."

Mom's notes:

Mwende is a very active girl. She loves to run, jump, dance and is almost constantly moving. She talks nonstop, and I sometimes wonder if she ever takes pause to breath. She is very imaginative and bright. She loves to play with her stuffed animals and dolls, they are her "kids". She is quick to memorize a bible verse. She memorized her first verse, 1 Thessalonians 5:11 within a couple of hours. She loves to play outside, especially if there is dirt or mud involved. She takes particular joy in her little sister and doesn't like to be apart from her even for Mwelu's nap. Mwende is very outgoing and will talk to anyone and everyone, even if they aren't listening or don't hear. She makes friends where ever she goes. She is her Mama's shining star.

This morning we had the usual 'goodbye daddy' routine. Long and drawn out. Plenty of tears. About 15 minutes after Patrick finally managed to escape Mwende said:

"I wish Daddy didn't have to work and we could still have all this stuff."

Why God needs leaves

We're driving down the street when Mwende sees a couple of trees that don't have leaves on them. She exclaims, "Oh no Mama! Those trees are dead! They don't have any leaves!" "Oh no..." I say. She says, "Does that make God sad?" "I'll bet it does, God likes leaves." I respond. She thinks for a moment and then says, "I know why God needs leaves!" "Why?" I ask. "God needs leaves to make celery!"

Mwende was lying on my mother's lap (her Grandma) playing with the skin on her arm. I have permission from my mom to call it "the flab under her arm". Anyway, Mwende was playing with it and suddenly exclaims, "Grandma, you don't have any bones in your arm!"

You can be my mommy

Mwende, Mwelu, my sister and I are up in Woodland, CA visiting my Aunt Sandy. We went to Gipson Ranch where my Aunt keeps her horses and my Mom, Aunt Jenny and cousins Wendy and Laura joined us for a mini family reunion. We were going to look at my Aunt's horse and Mwende was taking a golf cart with my mom, Aunt Sandy and my cousins. She is sitting next to my cousin Laura (who is 14 yrs) and stroking her hair. She then tells her, "When you grow up someday, you can be my mommy." Laura replies by saying "But, you already have a mommy." Mwende comes back with: "When my mommy dies and goes up in the sky, then you can be my mommy."

A plane just now flew over our place. Mwende comes running in and says "I just saw an airport!" "An airplane?" I replied. "No! An airport! That's where daddy lives. I mean, that's where daddy is!" (Patrick has been going on a lot of business trips lately)

Snug as a bug in a rug




Last night Mwende decided to sleep on the floor... using her hopscotch rug as a blanket. When I left her she was curled up underneath with a My Little Pony and her doll "Calisa" neatly tucked in beside her. I took this picture just before we went to bed for the night. Don't worry, Patrick transferred her to her bed. My little snuggle bug. :)

Pixie dust

Mwende is playing outside and has a box out there that she's filled with dirt. I go outside to hang a towel out to dry and suddenly she throws a handful of dirt at me. I spin around and holler at her, "Mwende Christine, what do you think you're doing?!" Her response? "It's just pixie dust, Mama!" I think the child expected that I would fly.

Why can't I have everything I want?

We're in Target today and Mwende is walking "next" to the cart. It becomes an endless stream of "Mama, I want this!" "No Mwende, put it back.", over and over again. I told her that she can't have everything she wants. She then asks one of life's greatest questions. "Why can't I have everything I want?" Tried to explain how we couldn't afford it, that it wasn't good for her anyway, how no one on earth really gets everything they want. It didn't sink in.

This is my daddy...

Patrick took the girls to the dry cleaner today to drop off some clothes. When they walked in, Mwende immediately introduced herself to the clerk.

"Hi, my name is Mwende. This is my sister, Mwelu. And this is my dad. He's really big and he doesn't have hair."

The clerk responded, "What happened to his hair?"

Mwende says, "He cut it last day."

("Last day" is Mwende speak for yesterday or the other day.)

01/18/11 - Mwende wakes up and requests coffee with no sugar.

01/18/11 - Patrick asks Mwende if she can share her egg with him. She instantly turns around and says to me, "Cook an egg for my Dad, Mom."

02/03/11 - Mwende: "Mama, I need a knife."
Me: "A knife?!?!"
Mwende: "Not a dangerous knife. Just, can I have a not-dangerous knife?"
Me: "What do you need a knife for?"
Mwende: "I need a knife for cutting something."
Me: "What do you need to cut?"
Mwende: "I need to cut something that's great for cutting with a knife. What's great for cutting, Mama?"
Me: ""I'm going to have to say no..."

02/09/11 - Mwende wants to know who she got out of my tummy when she was a baby. (I do my best to explain a c-section to her)

02/11/11 - Mwende wants to know why her Susu in Kenya is sleeping right now since the sun is up. (I explain it to her using a globe and a flashlight)

02/12/11 - Mwende wants to know why we can't see the earth turning. (I didn't have an answer for that one...)

02/21/11 - Mwende has a "monster ghost friend named Mwende" who has hair the same color as she does. She's afraid of her new friend, so she sleeps in her tent to hide.

02/28/11 - Mwende: "Knock Knock."
Patrick: "Who's there?"
Mwende: "Me! Mwende!"
Patrick: "Mwende who?"
Mwende: "Mwende Kimani and I have my bible!"

03/01/11 - Mwende has an imaginary pet ant that she is carrying around. She tells me that she loves him.

03/01/11 - Mwende puts a bunch of coins in a skillet and puts the lid on. She just sits there on the floor staring at it. Then she turns to me and says, "Mom, I'm waiting for the money to change into something else. Like cereal!"

03/07/11 - Mwende tells me that I need to go to the store to buy her some (girl scout) cookies and that it's okay, I can leave her at home and she'll take care of herself.

03/08/11 - Mwende was sick for a few days. I told her, "Mwende, you haven't been eating much lately." Mwende responds, "That's okay 'cause I can do a headstand and a flip. See?" (Decided she was feeling better.)

03/10/11 - Mwende tells me that she is cooking me an egg with light salt and frosting.

03/12/11 - Mwende shows me the various "dishes" she's made for family members. "Eggs" for Patrick, Mwelu and I and "popcorn" for her sister Joan and her brother Joseph.

03/19/11 - Mwende tells me that she is "milking" her rubber ducky while she shows me how it squirts water.

03/28/11 - "I'm never going to play again! I'm just going to lie here and wait for it be time for the tv to turn on again."

2010

01/19/10 - Mwende told me she needed a bandaid for her latest "hurt". I told her that I needed to see red blood before she gets a bandaid and that I don't see any. She proceeded to ask me "see blue blood?". Me, "no." "See orange blood?" "no" "See green blood?" "no". Apparently she ran out of colors then because she started giggling and said "okay!" and was on to the next thing.

01/24/10 - New twist on the rainbow colored blood theme. Mwende asked for a bandaid, I told her I didn't see any red blood, nor did I see any orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, black or gray blood. I saw her little mind working and she came out with "see any applejuice blood?"

02/07/10 - "Go football" (While watching the Superbowl with us.)

02/16/10 - Mwende runs around the corner declaring, "Mama! The dinosaurs are coming!!". Patrick, the dog & I are then instructed to check every room in the apartment carefully for hiding dinosaurs until she declares they're in the living room & huddles against first me & then Patrick declaring that she is scared. Fortunately Patrick was successfully able to scare the dinosaurs away.

02/27/10 - So Mwende comes up to me & hands me something imaginary. She doesn't say anything, but I assume it is tea or cookies since she was just running around saying "tea time!". So, I pretend to eat it. She looks at me with this incredulous look on her face & asks "Mama, you ate my lizard?!" Oops! So I tell her, "Nooo! I was just kissing him". That will teach me to make assumptions with imaginary play!

03/04/10 - Just told Mwende that we have a birthday party to attend tomorrow. She says "Yay! That's so YUMMY!".

03/13/10 - "Look at me Mom! I'm a princess!"

03/19/10 - "I'm shaking my booty Mom!"

03/20/10 - "I'm going to ride an etephant later, Daddy!"

04/02/10 - (After requesting a knife and being told that we don't give knives to kids.) Mwende - "I'm not a kid, I'm Mwende!", Patrick - "You know those two things are not mutually exclusive.", Mwende - "Okay. I want cake."

04/03/10 - Patrick is shaving his head and Mwende walks in, looks at him and says "You're a man now, Daddy?". Then she comes out and sits with me. When Patrick is finished he comes out and Mwende looks at him and says "NOW you look like a man!".

04/05/10 - So I take Mwende to go to the potty and there is a mosquito hawk in the bathroom. She squeals and says "Put bug away Mommy!". So I catch it and release it outside. When I come back she asks "Did bug fly away?". I tell her yes and she bursts into tears and cries "I WANT MY BUG BACK!!"

04/06/10 - "I want to eat a scary egg, Mom."

04/08/10 - "I'm not silly, I'm a cookie monster! Arrrr!"

04/09/10 - Told me "I want to be a mama like you!".

04/12/10 - "I'm dangerous! That's right."

04/15/10 - I ask Mwende why she is crying. She says "I want to cry! Waaaahhh!!"

04/15/10 - I ask Mwende to please stop fussing. She says, "I DO want to fuss!"

04/22/10 - Mwende gasps and starts yelling "No spanking Mama! No spanking Mama!" Sure enough, chili all over the floor.

04/25/10 - Mwende is "doing" my hair. She says "There!" and I ask her if I look beautiful. She says "Not yet!"

05/07/10 - Mwende teaches Mwelu how to growl and says "Look Mama! Mwelu is a little dinosaur!"

05/12/10 - I close the door to Mwende's room for her nap. She protests saying, "Open! Open! Open!" When that doesn't work she starts shouting "Abre! Abre! Abre!" (For context, see Dora the Explorer)

05/16/10 - Mwende refuses to take her tutu off (including sleeping in it) and says "Mama, I'm a princess!"

05/27/10 - Mwende tries to convince me to leave the room so that she can play in Simba's water bowl. She comes running up to me. "Go away Mommy! Go watch tv!" I tell her, "I'm not going away so that you can be naughty." She decides to risk it and I tell her "Stay away from Simba's water!" She says, "Don't watch me, Mama!"

06/01/10 - Mwende brings a "boo boo" on her leg to my attention. So I kiss her boo boo. She squeals "NO KISS!!" and grabs a wipe and starts scrubbing my kiss off her leg.

06/05/10 - "You know your problem, Mama?" "No, what's my problem?" "What's your problem, Mama?"

06/07/10 - "I want balloons. That would make me happy."

06/21/10 - Mwende negotiates nap time with me by saying that she's willing to take a nap as long as I let her take a balloon she just popped in with her so she can eat it.

06/21/10 - Mwende falls off her chair and says "I'm okay! I didn't bump my head open, Mama!"

06/25/10 - Mwende trying to convince me that the word "wipes" starts with "M". I asked her if wipes starts with the "mmm" sound. She says "yes!". I tell her "okay, say it." So she says "Mmm, wipes."

06/28/10 - "I'm not talking to you Mama, I'm talking to Mwende."

06/29/10 - When Patrick gets home, the first thing Mwende says is "Where are we going Daddy? Swimming?" He says "Nooo..." I told her no too, so she said, "That's okay, I'll go swimming by myself." So she puts on her bathing suit and gets her kickboard and starts doing her kicks on the living room floor.

06/29/10 - "I want my baby teeth to fall out Mama!"

06/30/10 - "When I'm super big like you Mama, I can drive then, right?"

07/03/10 - I have a migraine and Mwende brushes my hair to make me feel better.

07/07/10 - I'm rearranging the living room and there is stuff everywhere. Mwende looks around and says "Oh no! There's no room for me to run!"

07/08/10 - Mwende puts on my Boba carrier and says "I want to carry YOU, Mama!"

07/09/10 - Mwende trying to get out of naptime by telling me "I have a REALLY BIG problem, Mama!" I asked her what the problem was and she says that she needs to vacuum with me.

07/10/10 - I spill spaghetti noodles all over the kitchen floor and ask Mwende to bring me the broom. She comes in and says, "You made a mess!" I say, "Yes, I did. Am I in trouble?" She says "Yes, you made me mad!" and starts sweeping up.

07/16/10 - "Is Jesus here with me, Mama?" (her first question to me when she woke up)

07/30/10 - "When I grow up, I'm going to put on my wings and fly far far away to Aunt Kelly's house to find Simba."

08/04/10 - Told Mwende that she's beautiful. Her response: "Yes I am."

08/06/10 - Mwende asked me to color with her. I told her I was too sick to color. She tells me, "Don't give up! Keep trying!" (for context see Yo Gabba Gabba)

08/08/10 - Mwende on bedtime, "I do want to go to sleep! But I just can't."

08/13/10 - Told Mwende to get down off the dresser before she falls and busts her head open. She tells me, "Its okay, Jesus will fix me... with tape."

08/13/10 - Mwende cuts her own hair.

08/17/10 - "Mama, I need a little spanking."

08/20/10 - Mwende cleans the living room while singing the clean up song. When she's done she starts running in circles and says "Yay! Now I have room to run and play!"

08/29/10 - Mwende points to Patrick and says "That's my prince when I grow up."

08/29/10 - Mwende opens the back door and sits on her giant stuffed butterfly in order to fly to her Aunt Kelly's house.

08/31/10 - Mwende gets on her bike in order to ride to heaven.

09/04/10 - 2nd night of the girls sharing a room. Whenever Mwelu starts to cry, Mwende immediately shouts "AAAAAHHH!" Mwelu stops for a moment. She starts to cry again, Mwende shouts again. This goes on for a couple of minutes before they both just stop and go to sleep.

09/09/10 - Mwende is running around with mesh over her head saying "I'm married! I'm married!" I asked her who her husband is. She says, "I can't remember."

09/18/10 - Mwende: "Today is my birthday, today is my birthday, today is my birthday..."; Me: "How old are you?"; Mwende: "Big!"

09/21/10 - Me: "I love Mwende."; Mwende: "Why?"; Me: "Cause you're my girl."; Mwende: "Oh. I love you 'cause you're my man."

09/28/10 - Mwende: "Mama, I need to take a bath.", Me: "No you don't. You already took one today and you're not dirty." (Mwende disappears for a few moments and comes back completely covered in sunscreen.) Mwende: "NOW, do I need to take a bath?" Me: "Yes".

09/29/10 - Mwende sneaks a permanent marker into her room for her nap and marks on every surface in her room.

10/03/10 - We're walking to the laundromat in the dark and Mwende sees a lady coming down the sidewalk toward us and says "Oh no! Look Mama! Its a monster!" I had to explain to Mwende that no, that's a lady, not a monster. Fortunately the lady was really nice.

10/13/10 - I finally give in to Mwende's please for soda when then soda machine gave me an extra can of Sprite. She was sooo excited, hugging it all the way home from the laundromat, talking about how much she loves soda. I give it to her at home and she says, "Oh no, Mama! It spit at me! I don't like soda, its trying to hurt me."

10/14/10 - Patrick answers the door to a solicitor and Mwende and Mwelu go running/crawling out the door. Patrick asks Mwende where they're going and she says "We're going to our own home, Daddy!"

10/18/10 - Mwende after she had run into a table, "I hurt myself, but I still love me!"

10/19/10 - Mwende finds a coin on the floor and goes running out the door saying that she needs to go buy us milk and food.

10/27/10 - Mwende wants to know where the wind comes from. (we check out a book at the library to find out)

10/27/10 - Yelled at Mwende "You know better!" after she dunked her bath towel in the bath tub. She looks at me and very matter a factly says "Yeah I do."

11/01/10 - Mwende takes her baby doll, a My Little Pony, 2 plastic lizards and a mini skateboard to bed with her.

11/09/10 - Me: "I need a nap.", Mwende: "You can't take a nap 'cause we need to play with you!"

12/01/10 - Mwende is grounded to her room for the night. She is trying to get my attention from the other side of the door and I tell her that part of being grounded is that she doesn't get to talk to me. So she says "If you won't talk to me, then you go to time out in YOUR room!!! Go to your room now, Mommy!"

12/03/10 - Mwende on sharing with Mwelu: "Mama, there's 1-2-3-4 for Mwelu and there's 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12-13-14-15-16-17 for me!"

12/13/10 - "Mwelu! No swiping!" (For context, please see Dora the Explorer)

12/18/10 - Mwende is brushing my hair and putting barrettes in it. She tells me that she's making me pretty for Daddy.

12/18/10 - Mwende informs me that I am a "stinky-head". I asked her where she heard that word. She says TV. So I tell her that she's grounded from TV for 4 weeks. (This one day before we leave for a 4 week trip to Kenya)

07/21/09 - Turned off the tv and turned on music for Mwende. She wasn't pleased with my decision to do this and started crying, wagging her little finger in my face and telling me, "Mama, NO! Stop!"

09/29/09 - Mwende "tickles" her Grandma via Skype.

10/06/09 - Mwende is in her room kissing someone. I don't know who. But she's supposed to be napping anyway.

10/14/09 - I'm crossing the street at the crosswalk near the end of a long walk when some guy (who is waiting to turn left) shouts out "COME ON LADY!!! WALK!!!". Wow. A couple minutes later Mwende starts chanting "faster Mama, faster!"

10/15/09 - Mwende is claiming everything that I pull out for the new baby. She has currently buckled herself into the bouncy chair and is walking around with it attached to her bum.

10/22/09 - Mwende was watching college football with her daddy when she suddenly jumped up on the coffee table and started waving her hands and yelling "Time Out! Time Out!" at the tv. Lol! She might have gotten that from me...

10/26/09 - Hopping along the floor saying "Ribbit! Ribbit! Ribbit!".

11/04/09 - We received the first baby gift in the mail (from friends in NY). Recently, Mwende has been receiving delayed birthday gifts in the mail and joyously opening them. I told her this gift is not hers but for the baby in mama's tummy. To my surprise she said, "okay", and went to her room. Soon after she emerged with her baby doll and said "I found baby, now open it”.

11/04/09 - I've been showing Mwende what her name looks like on paper. Then she decided she wanted me to make a list for her. In the order she requested... Mama, Mwende, Simba, Grandma, Grandpa, Daddy, Kelly, Susu, Ryan, Tess, Anberlyn, Kids, House of God.

11/17/09 - Go to get her in the morning and put her up on the changing table, asking her if needs a change. She says "no, still sleeping" and shuts her eyes real tight. 2 seconds later she yells "Awake!" and starts listing what she wants for breakfast. "Grapes, juice, water, tea."

11/27/09 - Mwende climbed up in her time out chair and started chanting "two minutes!". Apparently she did something wrong and decided to beat us to it!

11/29/09 - Mwende got to choose stickers to put on a coloring sheet that represent what she is thankful for in church. What is she thankful for? Oranges and dogs.

12/02/09 - Grandma is trying to get Mwende to tell her baby sister's name. Mwende thinks for a moment and says "baby sister!"

12/12/09 - Told Mama to "Go home and get God."

12/28/09 - Conversation between Grandma & Mwende - "Mwende, do you need a diaper change?" "No!" "Mwende do you have poop in your diaper" "No!" "Mwende are you telling me the truth?" "No!"

Introduction

So I've had several people tell me that I need to write a book or at least keep a blog of Mwende's antics. No matter what I do, I DO need to keep track of them. Posting them on Facebook doesn't work since my status updates aren't search-able. Thus begins the "Mwende-isms" blog. I'll start by listing some past "isms".
